Your Driveway & Garage Resource Center

In order for an application for a Driveway or Garage permit to be reviewed, it must include all required information. An application without complete information, including all required plans, may not be processed until the submittal is complete.  Whether you are building new, or repairing, restoring or refinishing your home, the work and goal can be a rewarding experience and we want to help make it as easy as possible!  The following can be found on our Download Permits & Applications, Licenses and Guides page, and are required for your Driveway & Garage needs: 

Permit Submittal Requirements 
Driveway

  • Building Permit
  • Guaranty Deposit Bond.  A $50 re-inspection fee will be deducted from this bond.  The re-inspection fee/s should be the responsibility of the contractor.
  • Contractor's License.  All contractors must be licensed in the Village of Arlington Heights prior to release of permit.
  • Three collated sets containing: Contractor's Proposal; Homeowner as General Contractor, if applicable; Concrete Asphalt Acknowledgement, if applicable; Brick Paving Requirements, if applicable; Brick/Decorative Concrete Waiver Letter, if applicable; Marked up Plat of Survey showing existing and proposed dimensions of driveway and apron, driveway and apron must be same width at public sidewalk, length of curb to be replaced, and squares of sidewalk to be replaced

Garage Demolition

  • Building Permit
  • Same Day Statement of Compliance
  • Real Estate Index Number; the Index number can be found on your tax bill.
  • Subcontractor List.  All contractors, excluding plumbing & electrician, are required to be licensed in the Village of Arlington Heights prior to release of permit.
  • Contractor's License.  All contractors are required to be licensed in the Village of Arlington Heights prior to release of permit.
  • Demo Contractor's $20,000 Wrecking Bond
  • Cook County Permit
  • Guaranty Deposit Bond.  Re-inspection fee/s will be deducted from this bond, as applicable.  The re-inspection fee/s shall be the responsibility of the contractor.
  • Three collated sets containing: Plat of Survey marked showing structures to come down and top of foundation relative to existing foundation or bench mark; Open Excavation Acknowledgement 

Garage Floor

  • Building Permit
  • Same Day Statement of Compliance
  • Contractor's License.  All contractors are required to be licensed in the Village of Arlington Heights prior to release of permit.
  • Two collated sets containing: Contractor's Proposal; Homeowner as General Contractor, if applicable; Concrete/Asphalt Acknowledgement, if applicable.


Permit Submittal Information

Driveway

  • Plan Review Fee is $11 per thousand of the value of work and due at time of submittal
  • All applications, including revisions, must be submitted to the Building & Life Safety Services Department
  • An engineering inspection fee of $50 and a $200 refundable bond will be due at time of permit pick up
  • Allow 10 working days for review time


Permit Revision Information

Driveway

  • If there is a rejection by any reviewing department, a correction report will be mailed/faxed to the permit applicant after the plan has been reviewed by all reviewing departments
  • Revisions may take an additional 10 working days to process
  • If the general contractor and/or any subcontractors change, a letter from the permit applicant documenting the replacement general contractor and/or any subcontractors is required. The Village of Arlington Heights requires that contractors working within the Village obtain a contractor’s license and/or present proof of registration to work in the Village in accordance with the Arlington Heights Municipal Code.

Driveway

  • Maximum Driveway Widths
    One or Two Car: Max 22' Wide; Min 9' Wide
    Apron can have 3' flare on each side for a total of 6' at street
    Three Car: Max 32' Wide
  • Grade elevations will be required for all driveways to rear yard garages.  Curbing may be required to ensure proper drainage.  


Inspection Requirements for Driveway
These are the standard inspections for this application type. Depending on your scope of work the project may require additional inspections. Inspections are mandatory while work is in progress to ensure that construction complies with approved plans and code regulations:

  • EN Pre-Pour/Base Driveway.  Work are must be framed and base material in place. 
  • EN Final.  Frames removed and work area must be restored /backfilled. 


Inspection Information
Driveway

  • To schedule an inspection, call Building Services at least 24 hours prior to the time you want the inspection to occur.
  • Your permit number is required in order to schedule an inspection.
  • Specific inspection times are not available. You may request A.M. (9-12) or P.M. (12-3) and we will try to accommodate your request.
  • When calling for an inspection, please give a contact name and phone number.
  • You must be ready for the inspection. The inspector/s will not re-inspect your job on the same day. If you are not ready the first time, you will need to call the office and re-schedule for the following day. A re-inspection fee will apply.
  • Approved plans to be available on site, no inspection will be performed without approved plans on site.
  • Be sure to schedule your final inspection.
  • For concrete/asphalt/brick work, your permit covers one pre-pour/base and one final inspection by Building and Engineering. Additional inspection charges will be deducted from the bond on file. Approved pre-pour/base and final inspections are required for bond refund. If there is not a pre-pour inspection, your bond will be forfeited.
  • Work authorized by a permit must begin within six months from the date the permit was issued and must also be completed within one year. Work extending beyond these time frames requires approval by the Director of Building & Life Safety Services. To obtain approval, fill out the permit extension letter and submit to Building Services. 


Re-Inspection Information
Driveway

  • If you are not ready for your inspection or if your inspection fails and the inspection has to be rescheduled, a re-inspection fee will be required. Payment of re-inspection fee/s is for jobs where there is no cash bond on file.
  • Bonds are released after an approved final inspection/s. Please allow 4 weeks for bond refund.
