Design Review & Beautification
The Planning & Community Development Department oversees and implements architectural design and beautification efforts to align with the Village’s overall objectives for high quality architecture and aesthetics throughout the Village. The goals include review of Design Guidelines, Landscape review, Sign Code Modifications and sign permit review.
Design Review
The Planning & Community Development Department oversees the review process for Design Commission applications with preliminary and formal reviews. The Department review encompasses landscape design review to ensure a high quality and cohesive treatment of commercial projects. The projects reviewed for design and architecture are:
- Commercial Development
- Single-family homes
- Variance request for signage
- Administrative review of single-family homes
- Administrative review of commercial development
- Landscape design review

Urban Design and Beautification Projects
Urban design and landscape beautification projects encompass corridor enhancements, signage program for the Village, on-going landscape design for Village properties. Coordination of urban design and beautification projects are required with other Village Departments such as Public Works and Engineering. Coordination efforts for projects include streetscape improvements, budget and estimation, concept development, design phase and construction phase. The Department is responsible for the preparation of design development and construction documents, specifications and contract administration for urban design projects. The beautification projects are:
- Landscape medians for North Arlington Heights Road
- Gateway Signage Program
- Banners for downtown as north south connectors
- Kiosks for downtown
- Triangular Plaza
- Bike Shelter
- Study of Underpass improvements for connectivity
- South Arlington Heights Road Corridor
- Decorative Light Poles for the downtown
- Decorative banners Village wide, Winter and July Fourth events
Arts Commission
The Arts Commission is designed to encourage, engage and promote arts within the community. In September of 2008, the Illinois Arts Alliance and the Illinois Municipal League selected the Village as the recipient of the President’s Arts Friendly Award. Click here for more information on this award. The Arts Commission continues to facilitate communication with the community and local artists such as the rotating Village Hall Art. As part of the first Village Hall exhibit, a total of 21 local artists participated. The Arts Commission continues to explore future phases for a sculpture walk. The Arts Commission efforts include:
