Fall Leaf Sweeping Program

About The Fall Leaf Sweeping Program

From mid-October through December the Department of Public Works removes fallen leaves from over 400 lane miles of Village-owned streets. The Department uses five street sweepers and ten dump trucks to facilitate leaf removal operations. Leaf sweeping crews remove leaves from every Village street on a three week cycle. After leaves are removed from Village streets, they are transported to a compost processing facility.

Residents are reminded that Village ordinances prohibit raking or blowing leaves into the street. The Village is responsible for removing fallen leaves in the street, but will not collect leaves that have been raked or dumped in the street.

During the leaf sweeping/removal season, rainfall can cause flooded streets in isolated locations. Although street sweeping efforts try to keep up with falling leaves, there are over 4,700 street drainage structures in Arlington Heights which means some localized flooding is inevitable at times. Residents are asked to help clean street drains when necessary by carefully removing leaves from the drains while being especially mindful of traffic and water depth. When clearing drains, pile leaves on the curb/parkway behind the drain.
