Preventing Stormwater Pollution
A majority of the land surface area in the Village is served by a separate storm sewer system. The storm sewer system conveys rainfall runoff to rivers, lakes and streams. Stormwater runoff contains many contaminants that are dissolved or suspended as the stormwater flows over pavements, driveways, gardens, lawns, and other exposed outdoor surfaces.
Residents and businesses can help prevent stormwater pollution by using “good housekeeping practices” as recommended by the United States Environmental Protection Agency:
- Use environmentally safe products such as organic fertilizers and pesticides
- Recycle used motor oil and filters
- Never dump waste into street drains or curb inlets
- Pick up and properly dispose of pet waste
- Dispose of trash properly – do not litter
- Participate in household hazardous waste disposal programs
- Minimize the use of detergents when washing cars on your driveway.
Pollution prevention measures like those listed above can significantly reduce contamination of area water courses and reservoirs and improve the ecology of our surroundings.
