Sustainability In The Building Maintenance Unit
Building Automation System
The Public Works Department currently uses a Building Automation System (BAS) in our Fire Station #1, Fire Station #2, Police Department, Public Works Facility, Senior Center, and Village Hall. The BAS allows us to efficiently control each building’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Through the use of a computerized facility control system, heating and air conditioning can be raised or lowered during times when buildings are unoccupied, thus reducing operating costs for natural gas and electricity. Outdoor lighting is also scheduled to be connected through BAS.
Exit Signs
Over the last three years
Light Emitting Diodes (LED) exits signs were installed in Village buildings. LED's reduce energy costs and improve lighting levels.
Occupancy Sensors
The Public Works staff has initiated a program to install occupancy sensors throughout all Village buildings in a continuing effort to consume less energy. The program started in the Village Hall where occupancy sensors were installed in all offices, washrooms, and storage closets.
Upgrade work was recently performed in our Public Works facility washrooms, administrative offices, and some designated unit strategy areas. In the Public Works facility, the sensors are also controlling larger areas which require ceiling mounted sensors to control the intended lighting. All old incandescent down lighting has been retrofitted with compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs.
Recycle Fluorescent Lamps
In addition to reducing the waste stream, recycling fluorescent lamps prevents hazardous materials from the fluorescent lamps from entering landfill sites. All expended fluorescent lamps in all Village buildings are recycled.
