Department Wide Sustainability
Conservation Measures
The Public Works Department recognizes the benefits of conserving a precious natural resource, water. Measures such as limited outdoor sprinkling hours, use of water conserving plumbing fixtures, and public education all contribute to reduced water consumption.
Metering of All Domestic and Fire Flow Water Consumption
In an effort to properly account for all water consumed by customers in Arlington Heights, the Public Works department installs accurate water meters in all homes, business, school, and government buildings within the Village. Water consumption is billed bi-monthly. Billing for all water consumption indirectly results in conservation; consumers are less likely to waste water if they are held accountable and must pay for water used or consumed.
Water System Survey for Leak Detection
Recognizing the value and cost of Lake Michigan water, the Public Works Department employees sophisticated electronic leak detection equipment to locate and pinpoint water leaks in the municipal water distribution system. Members of the water distribution system survey hydrants, valves, service connectors, and other system components for leaks. Once detected, leaks are fixed in a very timely manner.
