Q: When I call for an ambulance, why does a fire truck arrive with or before it?
A: In addition to an ambulance, we send another vehicle, a fire truck or perhaps a squad, on all emergency medical calls. The personnel manning these vehicles are all trained emergency medical technicians and can assist the ambulance crew with equipment, patient assessment and transportation if needed.

Q: Why do I sometimes see emergency vehicles from other towns working in Arlington Heights?
A: At times, several calls for service, particularly ambulance service, will come in at the same time. If all our equipment is busy, or we require extra manpower and equipment to handle a fire, help will be dispatched from a neighboring town. These Mutual Aid and Automatic Aid Agreements work both ways, so you may see our personnel working in other towns as well.

Q: Should I place decals on my children's bedroom windows to alert Firefighters to their location in case of fire?
A: The Arlington Heights Fire Department, like the National Fire Protection Association, does not recommend this practice. Our Firefighters are trained to make a thorough, systematic primary and secondary search of the entire home in the event of fire. Also, children should be taught the basics of home escape planning and not rely on being rescued. They need to know what to do when the smoke alarms sound, two ways out of every room, to crawl low under smoke, gather at a meeting place, and call the fire department from outside the burning building. Also, these window decals may call attention to an area of vulnerability in the home, which could put the children or the entire household at risk for intruders.
