Public Invited to Comment August 15 as Part of Police Accreditation Process

A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc.(CALEA) will arrive Sunday, August 13th, 2017 to examine all aspects of the Arlington Heights Police Department’s policy and procedures, management, operations, and support services, Chief Gerald Mourning said.
 
“The Arlington Heights Police Department has been committed to the accreditation process as a voluntary means to ensure compliance to established criteria in law enforcement best practices, a highly respected recognition of law enforcement excellence,” he said. “Validation by a team of outside law enforcement professionals demonstrates the Department meets the Commission’s rigorous and state-of-the-art standards.” The Arlington Heights Police Department is hoping to continue to hold the distinction through this reaccreditation process. The Department initially
gained its accredited status in 2008 and has since been reaccredited twice, in 2011 and 2014.
 
As part of the on-site assessment, agency personnel and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a Public Information Hearing on Tuesday, August 15th, 2017, at 6:00 p.m. The hearing will be conducted in the Community Room of the Arlington Heights Village Hall, located at 33 S. Arlington Heights Rd., Arlington Heights, Illinois 60005.
 
Those who are unable to attend the Public Information Hearing but would still like to provide comments to the assessment team may do so by calling (847) 368-5881 on Monday, August 14th, 2017 between the hours of 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Comments will be taken by the assessment team. Telephone comments as well as appearances at the public information session are limited to10 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA standards.

The assessment team is composed of public safety practitioners from similar, but out-of-state agencies. The assessors will review written materials, interview individuals, and visit officers and other locations where compliance can be witnessed. Once the CALEA Assessors complete their review of the agency, they report back to the full Commission, which will then collectively decide if the agency is to be granted accredited status.
