Arlington Heights Ranks 8th in Environmental Study
August 14, 2009
Arlington Heights ranked 8th out of 408 communities in the 50,000 – 90,000 population bracket that participated in the Smarter Cities Project, an annual study conducted by the Natural Resources Defense Council that measures sustainability efforts in cities across the U.S.
Factors of environmental sustainability and livability in cities are the cornerstone of the Smarter Cities Project. The standards for measuring and comparing sustainability efforts in cities were created by academic, non-profit and government experts.
The ranking given to the participating communities is used as a tool to spotlight communities that are taking the lead in addressing the major environmental challenges of our time. This independent initiative involves comprehensive data collected from the Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Census Bureau and surveys from the participating communities that provided an overview of nine sustainability criteria including: Air Quality, Energy Production and Conservation, Environmental Standards and Participation, Green Building, Green Space, Innovation, Recycling, Standard of Living, Transportation and Water Quality and Conservation.
