Daylight Savings Time begins Sunday, March 13th, and the Arlington Heights Fire Department is reminding residents – when you change your clocks, change your smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector batteries! Almost 80% of child fire fatalities occur in homes without working smoke alarms. Help protect your loved ones by adopting this simple practice: Change Your Clocks – Change Your Batteries.

The Village of Arlington Heights Fire Department has set a goal to replace 500 smoke alarms in residential homes in 2022. Almost three out of five home fire deaths from 2014 – 2018 were caused by fires in properties with no smoke alarms or smoke alarms that failed to operate (NFPA). Many of these deaths may have been prevented if a working smoke alarm had been installed. To help keep residents safe, the Arlington Heights Fire Department is providing free smoke alarms and installation to residents who cannot afford to purchase their own smoke alarms, are physically unable to either install a new smoke alarm or change the batteries in their current alarms, or for residents unsure about how best to install a new smoke alarm. “The risk of dying in a home structure fire is 55% lower in homes with working smoke alarms and that means that these deaths are preventable by having a working smoke alarm installed correctly,” said Arlington Heights Fire Division Chief Dave Roberts. “We want to make sure we’re reaching as many residents in need of a smoke alarm as we can. If you need a smoke alarm in your home – please let us know.”
