The Public Works Department maintains all municipally owned property, streets, sidewalks, trees and landscaping, water and sewer systems, buildings and grounds, street lights and traffic signals. The department also provides other necessities of suburban life such as street sweeping, and snow removal and ice control to provide a pleasant and safe environment for the Village’s residents.  The Maintenance Division and Utilities Division of Public Works carry out a variety of tasks managed by the Public Works Department.

The Public Works Department is committed to working harder and smarter in order to continue the high level of service that the residents of Arlington Heights have come to expect and deserve.

Public Works Fleet

The Fleet Unit is responsible for the repair and maintenance of all Village owned vehicles and equipment. The Unit also maintains nine Wheeling Township and Pace buses, the Arlington Heights Bookmobile and the fuel inventory system serving all Village vehicles and equipment in addition to the Park District and School District 25 fleets. 

Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certified
Automotive Service Excellence is a nationally recognized organization that certifies the professionalism of automotive technicians through a written testing program that covers the latest advances in automotive technology. All five Fleet Unit technicians are certified in at least four areas and must maintain these certifications as a qualification of employment:

  1. Automobile brakes
  2. Automobile steering
  3. Medium/heavy truck brakes
  4. Medium/heavy truck steering

Presently our staff posses 12 Master Level certifications.

The Public Works Vehicle Maintenance Facility is an ASE Blue Seal of Excellence certified shop. To qualify for the Blue Seal of Excellence, at least seventy five percent of the staff must be certified in all of the maintenance and repair categories that are performed in the shop. Certification tests are offered twice each year and are valid for a period of four years. Fleet Unit technicians attend training sessions to stay current with the ever-changing automotive maintenance and repair field. 

Certified Public Works Professional | CPFP
In 2007, the American Public Works Association (APWA) began a national certification program to promote excellence in fleet management by advancing the knowledge and practice of public fleet professionals to benefit communities through quality fleet services. In 2007, Arlington Heights was among the first 22 communities in the nation to have staff members certified at this level. In 2010 additional staff successfully received this certification. Currently there are 95 Fleet Professionals in the nation certified at this level. 

Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Certification
The EVT Certification program is dedicated to improving the quality of emergency vehicle service and repair throughout the United States and Canada by means of a certification program that will provide technicians recognition for the education, training, and experience they have in the service and repair of emergency vehicles. There are currently three Automotive Technicians that have this EVT certification. Technicians certified at this level are primarily assigned to repair and maintain fire apparatus and other emergency vehicles and equipment.
