Full-Time Positions

Director of Public Works
The Village of Arlington Heights is pleased to announce the recruitment of the position for Director of Public Works.

The Village of Arlington Heights, Illinois, is one of the largest Chicago suburbs with a population of 75,100. The Director of Public Works is appointed by the Village Manager and is responsible for planning, directing and managing the Public Works Department. The Public Works Department has a staff of 101 Full-Time and 3 Part-Time employees and a 2021 capital and operational budget of $62,867,800.

The Village is seeking a well-qualified professional who poses considerable knowledge in public works operations, project management, community relations, personnel management, and excellent written and verbal communication skills. Minimum job requirements include a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering and/or Public Administration with ten or more years of Civil Engineering, Municipal Construction or Public Works Administration experience with five years at a supervisory level. Possession of an Illinois Professional Engineer License is desirable as is a Commercial Driver’s License or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. Master’s Degree is preferred. Salary Range of $145,000 - $170,000 DOQ and includes a diverse and competitive benefits package. Residency is not required.

Civil Engineer I Drainage | Public Works Department
The Village of Arlington Heights is accepting applications for an open position of full time Civil Engineer I in the Engineering Division of Public Works. This position is responsible for the design, management and inspection of construction of public and private improvements, focusing on drainage. Responsible for balancing construction quality, costs and public impacts. Reviews permits and plans of others and ensures these are constructed to Village standards and codes. Investigates and resolves drainage related questions and complaints from the public. This is a multi-level classification. 


Requirements include knowledge of local, state and federal engineering policies, procedures, codes and construction methods. Knowledge of good civil engineering practices in design, basic surveying and construction. Prepares preliminary and final plans for public improvements such as roads, storm sewers and water mains. Additional requirements include skill in the use of applicable computer software including spreadsheets, database management, word processing, CAD and various Engineering programs. Requirements include a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and one or more years of experience in general civil engineering work or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. Engineer in Training (EIT) Certification required or ability to obtain within 12 months from the date of hire.

Civil Engineer I Traffic | Public Works Department
The Village of Arlington Heights is accepting applications for an open position of full time Civil Engineer I in the Engineering Division of Public Works.  This position is responsible for maintaining all traffic related standards and codes within the Village. Reviews permits, plans, and traffic reports of others and ensures these adhere to Village standards and codes. Investigates and resolves traffic related questions and complaints from the public, including speed, traffic volumes, signage, traffic signals, pavement striping and lighting. This is a multi-level classification.

Requirements include knowledge of local, state and federal engineering policies, procedures, codes and construction methods. Knowledge of good civil engineering practices in design and construction. Knowledge of traffic engineering principals. Prepares preliminary and final plans for public improvements such as roads, sidewalks, multi-use paths, and roadway lighting. Additional requirements include skill in the use of applicable computer software including spreadsheets, database management, word processing, CAD and various Engineering programs. Requirements include a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and one or more years of experience in general civil engineering work, traffic engineering related work, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. Seasonal Counselors-In-the-Park | Police Department
The Village of Arlington Heights a northwest suburb of Chicago, population 75,101, is seeking seasonal Counselors to monitor the Village parks for the Police Department from Memorial Day weekend starting on May 28, 2021 through Labor Day weekend, September 6, 2021. Duties include patrolling and informing citizens of the park regulations during the evening hours of 7:00pm – 11:00pm starting at $11.00 per hour. Must be 21 years of age and have a cell phone. Qualifications
  • An Associate degree OR 60 hours of college credit from an accredited institution OR 24 months of honorable military service OR 180 days of military combat duty;

  • Be a U.S. citizen and have a valid Illinois driver’s license;
  • Pass oral interview, background investigation, polygraph, psychological exam, and medical exam, including a drug screening.
  • Status as a certified Police Officer in the State of Illinois for one year after completion of a probationary period. In good standing in the police department in which the person currently serves.
  • Possess substantially equivalent skills and abilities as a Village of Arlington Heights Police Officer who has completed the probationary period, as determined by the Village, and taken and passed such examinations as the Commission deems necessary to determine fitness for duty as a police officer.
  • Length of selection process varies based on vacancies. Customarily, the process takes 4-6 months.
  • Applicants may reapply after six months if not selected.
