On Saturday night, March 13, when you set your clocks forward one hour to “spring ahead,” be sure to also change the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.  If you have 10-year never replace battery alarms, they still need to be tested.

The Arlington Heights Fire Department would like to assist residents of the Village inspecting their smoke alarms, changing batteries, or installing new alarms if needed.  This is a program for those who are financially or physically unable to make sure they have safe operating smoke alarms in their homes.

The Fire Department will install a 10-year sealed never replace battery alarm, if required. We do not have replacements for “hard wired” smoke alarms or carbon monoxide alarms.

Smoke alarms are an important part of a home fire escape plan. When there is a fire, smoke spreads fast. People have a misconception that the smell of smoke will wake you up if you are sleeping. Working smoke alarms give you early warning so you can get outside quickly.  Roughly two thirds of home fire deaths happen in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.
