The Village is in the process of updating its permits and licenses information and more helpful documents will be periodically added to this page. Please reach out to the Building & Life Safety Department for all of your permit needs at 847.368.5560, or email them at building@vah.com. You can also pick up information from Building & Life Safety, located on the first floor of Village Hall, 33 S. Arlington Heights Road. 

For new single family homes, additions that substantially increase the overall square footage or modify the exterior appearance of the home, and commercial projects, please be sure to first discuss your project with the Planning & Community Development Department at 847.368.5200 regarding applicable requirements.

Construction Site Requirements

Hours Authorized for Construction Work 
Mondays through Fridays  from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays & Sundays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. 

Do Not Obstruct Public Sidewalks 
The Director of Public Works may give approval in rare cases - - only after issuance of building permit for sidewalk work contingent on advance notice given to pedestrians/public. 

Fencing 
Fencing of five-foot height is required.  Fencing is required around the perimeter of property for foundations, excavations, demolitions, in- ground pool excavations and any dangerous condition to prevent unauthorized access by public. 

Streets & Driveways of Adjacent Properties 
Traffic and deliveries shall not block driveways of adjacent properties. Barricades or flaggers are required when two-way traffic is restricted. Signs forbidding “construction traffic ” must be obeyed. Streets should be cleaned at least two (2) times a day. Streets should be kept free from construction debris. 

Observe Parking Laws 
Do not block streets or driveways and public-use parking spaces. 

Material and Equipment Storage 
Authorized only for materials needed for the job-site.

Control Dust 
Dust shall be controlled to the greatest extent possible Village may require use of water sprinkling to control dust.

Protection of Adjacent Properties 
Adjacent properties shall not be used for access, storage or discharge of construction-related debris or materials. Suitable protection for the general public shall be provided. 

Under the NPDES Phase II program through the US EPA, storm water runoff from private construction sites must be controlled. Prior to any excavation work, a silt fence must be properly installed around the perimeter of the work area and maintain ed until final restoration. Failure to comply will result in the issuance of a Stop Work Order. Property must be graded to prevent water from ponding.
